I remember an election not long ago where people were saying “Words Matter.”  Not sure who was saying this to whom, but I do remember thinking, “of course words matter, that’s they way we communicate.  Who wouldn’t believe that?” Today I want to talk about 3 very important words that can change your marriage and family if you take them as the scripture talks about them. Psalms 1:1 Blessed is the one  who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers.

The first word is WALK

Improving marriage and family depends on how you walk in life. If you primarily walk, embracing a self-centered life, then others will dislike your egotistical air. Yet, what happens if you walk by loving, serving, forgiving, sacrificing, and radiating a humble attitude in your household? Being positive in your marriage and family can improve your home life. Let’s heed what speaker Joyce Meyer says, “No matter what has happened to you in the past or what is going on in your life right now, it has no power to keep you from having an amazingly good future.” So to improve your marriage and family by walking with them in love.

STAND is the second word.

Improving your marriage and family life requires a willingness to stand for a better you. The downfall of culture primarily comes about by a breakdown in home life. Therefore to prohibit your household from a downfall, you must stand strong for them. Here are eight qualities you should stand for: “Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things” Philippians 4:8. If we stand on the things mentioned in this passage, our family will learn that purity and righteousness are what makes life good.

The last word is SIT

Finally, improving your marriage and family life depends upon an additional truth: How do you sit? Let’s imagine that the control center of your life is like a throne.  If you sit on your throne and try to rule your life yourself, you will fail every time.  We are all like that.  If you allow Christ to be seated on the throne of your life, you can rest assured that He will direct you in ways that will encourage and bind together your marriage and  family. Here’s a short video that shows exactly what I mean. It says that if you want Jesus to sit on the throne of your life, He can’t “one cheek” it! In other words, we have to give him everything in our life!

If we can remember these three simple words – walk, stand, sit – we can look for a positive improvement in our marriage and family life. Author Watchman Nee understood the value of those words when he wrote, “The Christian life from start to finish is based upon this principle of utter dependence upon the Lord Jesus.” Every household needs to walk, stand, and sit in Jesus.
