We live in a world of temptations, and often marriage and family are the target. One of the battles some loved ones face has to do with lust. The drawing power of this temptation brings deception and perversion. Left unchecked, this evil may destroy life and home. So consider 4 Ways to Keep Lust from Harming Your Marriage and Family.

L – Live life on the lookout.

To protect your family against harm, stay alert to lustful entry points that slither into the household. Being diligent to its danger is essential. Abraham Lincoln once said, “The leading rule for…the man of every calling is diligence.” So be diligent, be alert. As a parent, that means monitoring what your family watches on TV, in magazines, books, the internet, etc.  It’s a never ending task to monitor these, but it is worth saving your family from a lot of heartache. It’s perfectly ok to be the FBI (Family Bureau of Investigation) in your own home.  So be continuously on the lookout for these detrimental entry points.

U – Understand the devil uses lust to harm you, your marriage, and family.

The only way to counteract this is by seeking God for His protection from lustful assaults. Help comes in James 4:7, “Submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” The Lord is ready to win the battle as we rely on Him. Turn that TV show off, exempt that website, shut down that cable channel, do whatever you have to do to protect your family.  They will get enough of that stuff just by living life.  Don’t add to it in your home.  If your family does not see you standing up to protect them, they will assume that they need no protection at all.

S – Stand for righteousness.

To win over lust requires a willingness to live a righteous life. One purpose in living this kind of life is to secure a legacy of goodness and purity in our homes.  If you don’t want your house to burn down, don’t play with matches. We can trust God to help us stand strong in righteousness.  Then the draw of lustful pleasures can be reduced and overcome. Apply to your life what Henry David Thoreau wrote, “If you would convince a man that he does wrong, do right…Men will believe what they see. Let them see” you standing for righteousness.

T – Trust in Jesus to protect your marriage and family from lustful harm.

Overcoming the adversity of lustful deceptions requires that we trust in Jesus to direct us. This means prayer and searching the scriptures for answers must be formost in our families. Former first lady Michelle Obama wrote, “You should never view your challenges as a disadvantage. Instead, it’s important for you to understand that your experience facing and overcoming adversity is actually one of your biggest advantages.” Jesus lives as your advantage, trust Him for protection.

It is a daily task to live on guard about lust. Allowing ourselves to ignore the warnings the scripture can lead only to distruction in our marriage and family.  Heed the warning of pastor Douglas Horton: “The more we are filled with thoughts of lust the less we find true romantic love.”
