By Dr. James A. Perkins

Recently my wife and I went to a restaurant and were attended by a friendly waitress. As she served us, we learned that she dreamed of being a stand-up comic. The excited woman told us all about her recent amateur routine presentation in a comedy club in Atlanta. I believe most of us wish to see our dream come true. In this light, consider 4 ESSENTIALS TO FULFILL YOUR LIFELONG DREAM.

W – What Do You Want? Someone said, “If you don’t know where you’re going, any old road will get you there.” So clarity about your specific dream gives you vision, motivation, and commitment.

I – Intentionally Invest In Yourself Every Day To Accomplish Your Dream. Often there’s a great distance between the beginning of a dream and the fulfillment of it. The journey may be long and winding with challenges and set-backs. For instance, star football heroes must work hard for years to become stars. Hear what gridiron coach Vince Lombardi said about it, “Football is like life – it requires perseverance, self-denial, hard work, sacrifice, dedication and respect for authority.” To reach your dream, daily intentionally invest in it.

S – Safeguard Your Family. Be careful! Many people get so caught up in pursuing their dream that they begin to take their loved ones for granted. Don’t let this happen. No matter what you wish for, if your family fails, then you fail. So be sure to find quality and quantity time to spend growing in life with your family.

H – Honor God. Even more than maintaining family focus, be sure that the Lord remains first in your life. Numbers of singers, actors, writers, and business people get so caught up in attaining their dream that they miss the greatest one. If you claim you have a hope in heaven, then don’t ignore Jesus. Only by honoring the Lord will your lifelong dream really satisfy you.

As you seek to achieve your lifelong dream, please keep in mind a warning given by author Thomas S. Monson who wrote, “I testify to you today that turning away from God brings broken covenants, shattered dreams, and crushed hopes. Such a quagmire of quicksand I plead with you to avoid. You are of a noble birthright. Eternal life in the kingdom of our Father is your goal.”
